U.S. Releases Frozen Iranian Funds in Prisoner Swap

Five Iranians held in the U.S. will also be released.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Congress on Monday that the department has issued a waiver that will release $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds in international banks to secure the release of five Americans held captive in Iran. The funds will be released without threat of sanctions from the United States and five Iranians being held in the U.S. will also be released under the agreement. Secretary Blinken called the move a “critical step” in the U.S.-Iran relationship.

Representative Michael McCaul of Texas, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said, “I remain deeply concerned that the administration’s decision to waive sanctions to facilitate the transfer of $6 billion in funds for Iran, creates a direct incentive for America’s adversaries to conduct future hostage-taking.” He added that the administration’s move is “demonstrating weakness that further endangers Americans and freedom-loving people around the world.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Blinken to seek the Lord for wisdom as he heads the State Department.
  • For the president and his administration to be discerning as they make agreements regarding U.S. citizens imprisoned abroad.
  • For the Americans who have been held in Iran and for their families as they await their release.
